Combating dry or prematurely aging skin - the ins and outs

First up, the ‘ins’

The state of our skin is often an indicator of our wider state of health, and reflects the fact that what goes into our bodies shows up in the way we look and feel.

Eating and drinking plenty of pure water, fresh vegetables and fruit, good quality protein and fats every day is essential to feed your skin from the inside. A lack of vital nutrients impairs your ability to repair and renew, leading to weak, damaged and reactive skin with poor resilience.

Unfortunately, these days even a wholesome diet can leave many of us still not getting enough of these vital nutrients from our foods due to a whole raft of reasons including intensive farming and growing methods, depleted soils, medications, exposure to toxins from the environment and lifestyle choices, impaired digestion and absorption… the list goes on.

While some of these issues can be minimized (limiting alcohol, choosing organic and homegrown produce, paying attention to good digestion), supplementing with essential skin nutrients such as zinc, vitamin C and vitamin E alongside a wholesome diet can be helpful if you suffer from skin problems.

Another natural supplement of interest is Royal Jelly, the ultra-nutritious special food of the queen bee. Royal Jelly has a history of use as a skin, energy and anti-aging tonic, and recent scientific research suggests it may enhance collagen production in skin cells.

Next, the ‘outs’

In combination with good nutrition from the inside, we can provide protection and nourishment to the skin from the outside.

Pure oils, plant extracts and other natural ingredients help to restore and maintain skin moisture, provide antioxidant protection, reduce inflammation and promote healing and repair. One of the best natural ingredients for skin is Manuka Honey, a remarkable skin treatment that offers all of these actions in one:

  1. Manuka Honey restores hydration and plumpness to dry skin
  2. Manuka Honey has anti-inflammatory properties to help calm skin redness and irritation, eczema and sun damage
  3. Manuka Honey speeds healing and repair of damaged skin
  4. Manuka Honey has antibacterial activity when applied to acne, spots or broken skin

And as Manuka Honey needs no preservatives, fragrances or colours it is the perfect external skin food for all skin types, even sensitive or reactive skin.

Finally, any discussion of skin health would be incomplete without addressing the other ‘out’ - regular elimination. Irregular bowel motions means waste is hanging around too long and toxins are being absorbed from the bowel back into the bloodstream instead of being eliminated.

Fibre, exercise, plenty of water, and reducing intake of refined grains and sugar will help you to get and stay regular, all of which will happily also improve your overall health and have direct benefits for your skin.
