Celebrate Easter the healthy (but still decadent) way

When I was 10 years old I asked my mother for a fruit basket instead of an Easter egg. True story. In hindsight this probably signalled the beginning of my interest in natural health, although I confess I also stole some of my brother’s Easter egg that year (he was a ‘saver’ which I took as an invitation).

These days I still find myself seeking more wholesome treats to celebrate Easter; treats that are both healthier AND more tempting than the corridors of over-sweet chocolate and stodgy buns in the supermarket.

I have hand-picked some of my favourite homemade Easter treats that are the perfect combo of wholesome and delicious. And they’re pretty quick and simple to make, so no excuses!

Happy Easter everyone.

Petite Kitchen’s Little Spiced Fruit Buns - gorgeous made with the rich caramel sweetness of New Zealand Rewarewa Honey. Warm from the oven with pure butter and a dab more honey, now that’s what I call an Easter bun.

Free of nuts and refined sugar; contains gluten from Spelt flour and dairy (could be adapted to be gluten and dairy free though).

Don’t let the word ‘paleo’ put you off – these Easter eggs are seriously decadent AND wholesome. Not to mention simple - no baking required, just refrigerate, wait patiently for an hour and enjoy.

The delicate taste of Southern Clover Honey is perfect to sweeten yet not overwhelm all the coconutty, chocolatey goodness of these eggs.

Free of gluten, grains, nuts, dairy and refined sugar.

I tried these delectable raw Raspberry, Lemon and Coconut Truffles in Queenstown recently, and was delighted to discover the lovely folk at Vudu Café kindly post their recipes on their website so we can all try to recreate their culinary magic at home…

I’m going to attempt these with New Zealand Wild Flower Honey – a great all-rounder honey that blends well with other flavours.

Free of gluten, grains, dairy and refined sugar.

The Healthy Chef’s Raw Chocolate Cupcakes deliver serious nutrition and decadence in every bite. Made with walnuts and topped with a honey/avocado/chocolate frosting (yes, you read right, avocado!) these are far from a standard cupcake. The rich taste of Manuka Honey Blend would work wonderfully in the frosting.

Free of gluten, grains, dairy and refined sugar.

Elana’s Pantry Coconut Macaroons are perfect treats for the non-chocoholics. These are so quick and simple and contain only 4 ingredients – how hard can it be?

The smooth and creamy butterscotch flavour of New Zealand Tawari Honey is the perfect match to sweeten these delicious macaroons.

Free of gluten, grains, nuts, dairy and refined sugar.
